Vaginal Hygiene Practices and the Formation of Sexuality

I had discussed elsewhere that in contemporary Iranian society, sexuality is regulated by traditional cultural restrictions, prohibitions, taboos, and indirect regulations due to the country’s traditional and highly religious culture. The traditional restrictions on cross-sex associations are one of the many limitations that regulate the relationship between the sexes. Studies of sexuality in the context of contemporary Iran have largely overlooked vaginal practices (all the practices that are performed in the vaginal area for hygiene, beauty, grooming… reasons).

In the article ‘Vaginal Hygiene Practices and the Formation of Sexuality’, I used the life-story method to discuss the narrative of an Iranian woman’s vaginal hygiene practices. The article is an attempt to discuss how vaginal hygiene and beauty practices are made sense of in the life trajectory, during childhood, while coming of age, in sexual relationships…
